ABOUT JACOB

Ever wonder how Maui’s red dirt gets its color? Or how the composition of gases in magma affects a volcanic eruption? If so, Jacob will happily explain it all to you—and while he’s at it, he’ll share innumerable other scientific tidbits too. “I love facts,” he says, “and I love sharing them.” After earning a degree in chemistry, Jacob decided to make Maui’s beaches, mountains, and forests his workplace. “I wanted an office with a view,” he laughs.

As a Hike Maui guide, Jacob’s chemistry know-how certainly comes in handy, as well as his near-encyclopedic knowledge of botany, geology, Hawaiian history, and culture. “I feel very lucky to do what I enjoy on an everyday basis,” he says.

Apart from regaling his guests with fascinating facts, Jacob delights in helping them step out of their comfort zones. “When you watch someone jump off a waterfall for the first time in their life and you see the look of pure joy on their face…you know it’s a day they’ll remember forever,” he says.

Guest quote: Jacob is a very knowledgeable tour guide, and is also an excellent driver. He gave every guest on the tour plenty of attention, and made the hike so much fun!
