Journey Above the Clouds
A visit to Maui isn’t complete without experiencing Haleakala Crater—a magnificent amphitheater of silence and endless views that will put the awe in your awesome vacation. Our crater tour offers an adventure through two very different environments high up on this dormant volcano.
Your guide will lead you on a two-mile hike at the 10,000-foot summit where huge cinder cones dominate the desert-like, expansive scenery. Then your group will descend to 8,000 feet for a two-mile hike along a lava trail lined with rare native plants. And throughout this adventure, your guide, who is an expert naturalist, will provide insightful, entertaining, and interesting information about the otherworldly terrain you’re exploring.

My husband, 10 year old daughter, and I did the Haleakala Crater hike. It was an excellent day! The scenery along this trail was absolutely gorgeous. Our guide was a huge hit with the kids too, as she played a trivia game along the way.”

Frequently Asked Questions
We’ve Got you Covered
Does Hike Maui provide gear and food for the tour?
We provide most everything you need for an awesome day on the trail:
- Water
- Food (snacks and/or lunch, depending on the tour)
- Backpacks
- Ponchos, in case of rain
- Insect repellent, if needed
- Hand sanitizer
- And, of course, our guide to keep you entertained and safe
Do I need to bring anything on the tour?
- Towel: Waterfall tours include swimming (optional).
- Reef-Safe Sunscreen (look for zinc oxide or titanium dioxide-based sunscreens): Helpful on any tour, but essential on the Haleakala Crater trip.
- Camera & Phone: Please bring a Ziploc or a plastic bag to prevent any damage from moisture.
- You are responsible for any personal equipment you choose to bring along.
What if it rains?
We’ve found that a little rain adds to the adventure and complimentary ponchos are available if needed. Plus, swimming under a waterfall in the rain is an unforgettable experience. We do run our tours in most weather conditions but reserve the right to alter tour parameters if safety issues arise.
Will there be a bathroom on the trail?
There are toilets or porta potties at the trailhead for some hikes. But once we begin hiking, we head for the bushes when nature calls. If you’re uncomfortable with this arrangement, please let your guide know before the hike begins so you can both decide what’s best for you.
Do you provide hotel transfers?
Hotel transfers are offered on several of our tours, subject to availability. For an additional fee, we’ll pick you up at your hotel and return you after the tour. Transportation is available from all major resort hotels and condominiums, but not private residences or in towns outside of our service area. Our vans are PUC certified, commercially insured, serviced regularly for high performance, are air conditioned and are cleaned and disinfected after every tour.
What is Hike Maui's cancellation policy?
If you cancel 24 hours or more prior the date of the event, you’ll receive a full refund less a 10% cancellation fee. If you cancel within 24 hours for any reason, you’ll receive no refund.
In the unlikely event Hike Maui cancels your tour (which we do for dangerous weather), you’ll receive a full refund.
