About Roger
Wildlife biologist, fly-fishing guide, ski-trip leader…Roger has been an outdoorsman his entire life, so being a Hike Maui guide is right up his alley. “It’s especially rewarding when I have people on my hikes who haven’t had much opportunity to experience nature,” he says. “I enjoy opening their eyes to things they haven’t seen before.
After stints in Nebraska, Wyoming, Alaska, and Maui, Roger decided he wanted to experience the “big city life” for a while, as well as immerse himself in another culture. So he studied Japanese for two years at our local college, then lived in Kobe and Osaka, Japan, for five years, where he was first an exchange student, then taught English.
Although they didn’t meet in Japan, Roger’s wife is Japanese, and they speak both languages at home. Along with their daughter, they’ve traveled to Japan twice to visit family members. “I think it’s important for my daughter to have a strong connection with her Japanese relatives.”
Guide Quote: Roger made our hike very informative and interesting. His wealth of information made our day in Haleakala Crater a great experience. Our guide Roger, the tour, and the lunch exceeded our expectations, and we look forward to Hike Maui’s other tours on our next trip to Hawai‘i.
