For those who want to reach the crater floor and get a good workout. We hike the Switchback Halema`u Trail at the 8,000-foot level and descend 1,600 feet to the crater floor. Most would consider this strenuous.

• Descend through alpine scrub forest on a lava rock trail.
  
• This end of the crater has more endemic Hawaiian plants than the summit.
  
• Cross the crater floor past huge slabs of lava and bizarre rock formations.
  
• Hike two miles across the floor to Holua Cabin.
  
• Return back up the Switchback Trail.
  
• Panoramic views all day long.
• Lunch and snacks included.
